Varicose Vein Frequently Asked Questions
What causes varicose veins?
There are numerous factors that contribute to their development. In most cases there seems to be a genetic component. However, any activity that encourages venous blood to move backward from the abdomen and pelvis down the legs also plays a role. For example; standing in one place for long periods of time (gravity is pulling the blood down), lifting heavy objects or straining (increased pressure in the abdomen forces blood back down the legs), and pregnancy (increases pressure in the abdomen just like straining only for several months without break).
